The 23rd FG roots go back to the 23rd Pursuit Group formed December 17, 1941. Sent to China they assumed the duties and name “Flying Tigers” from the disbanded AVG. The 74th FS was one of the original FS assigned to the new 23rd FG. March 2002, the 23rd FG deployed from Kuwait to Afghanistan where they operated as part of “Operation Enduring Freedom” and “Operation Southern Watch”. February 2003 the 23rd returned to Kuwait to launch attacks on Baghdad in “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. Later they deployed forward to An-Nasiriyah.
