During the Second World War, the AT-6 Texan was used as an advanced trainer. With the outbreak of war in Korea the T-6s received a makeover. They were given special radios and ADF, increased firepower and provision for an extra 55 gallons of fuel. The equipment received by the Austrian Air Force didn’t have the setup for rockets and missiles because of a restriction placed on them forbidding their use until the 1990s. Even the machine gun capabilities were removed. Once again the plane was strictly a trainer.

The Austrian Luftabteilung (Air Force) was created on September 13th 1955 and the Fliegerschul (Flying School) was formed at Linz/Horsching on October 1, 1957 with Fliegerschulkompanie II (Flying School Company 2) beginning 7 months later. The first aircraft were Yak-18s and Fiat G.46s but in 1960 under the MAP (Military Assistance Program) the U.S. provided 10 replacement North American T-6 Texans. 4C-TH was construction # 168-267 and built in 1949. Originally registered as 49-3163 and served in Austria as 4C-TH from October 1959 to November 1964 when it was scrapped. The Texans were used for basic training and tactical training until 1971.
