VMA-513 “Flying Nightmares” was first commissioned as VMF-513 in February 1944. The squadron transitioned to the AV-8A Harrier in 1970 and was re-designated VMA-513 in 1971. In 2001 they were the only squadron in the world to simultaneously use all three variants of the AV- 8B. VMA-513 was the first Harrier unit to drop a JDAM in combat, the first to use the LITENING II targeting pod in combat and in 2007 the first squadron to fly MAG missions from a foreign ship.
