The 27th FS Lockheed F-22 Raptor 09-4174 had art work applied to honor the 27th FS highest scoring WWII Ace Major Thomas Maloney. Major Maloney crashed while flying his P-38 named “Maloney’s Pony” and presumed dead but miraculously he survived even after stepping on a land mine and crawling for 10 days before a French farmer found him. The 27th FS began making one of their aircraft a “Maloney’s Pony” until they equipped with stealth F-22s in 2005. In 2011 the tradition was reinstated and the 27th FS have their “Maloney’s Pony” back on one aircraft.
