In January 1960 the 493rd TFS “Grim Reapers” / 48th TFW equipped with the F-100 Super Sabre moved to RAF Lakenheath, England. In 1972 the squadron was re-equipped with the F-4 phantom II which they flew until 1977 when the F-4s were sent to Nellis AFB and after a few more trades 493rd TFS received the General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark. F-111F 70-25403 was produced in 1970 as C/N E2-42 and assigned to the CO of the 493rd TFS. The 493rd TFS re-equipped with the F-15C Eagle in 1994.
