The F-16 Fighting Falcon was produced by General Dynamics who became Lockheed who then merged with Martin Marietta to become Lockheed Martin. The F-16 entered service in January 1979 as a multi-role jet fighter that evolved into an all-weather multi-role aircraft capable of sustaining 9-g turns. The F-16 is relatively inexpensive to purchase and maintain so the U.S. and 25 other countries added it to their inventory. The Fighting Falcon is referred to by its pilots as the “Viper” and will remain in USAF service until 2025.
The Republic of Singapore 143 Squadron “Phoenix” (Motto - We Dare) is located at the Tengah Air Base and operates F-16C/D block 50/52 Fighting Falcons. The 143 Squadron operates 12 F-16C/D aircraft wearing yellow tail bands and specialize in interception and performs air-to-ground operations in conjunction with its partner squadron the 140th also located at the Tengah AB. In 2003 the unit replaced its 4-SU Super Skyhawks for the new F-16. In 2008 F-16C 646, s/n 97-0119, c/n DA-20 was the #1 aircraft with the RSAF “Black Knights” aerobatic team.
