The No. 77 Squadron was formed at RAAF Station Pearce, Western Australia, in March 1942 equipped with Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawks. In July 1986 the RAAF began to phase out the older Mirage aircraft and on June 29, 1987 received the first F-18 Hornet. The No. 77 squadron flew the Hornet until December 11, 2020 and began to convert to the F-35A through 2022. One of the F-35As is A35-039 c/n AU-39 U.S. serial 19-5512 completed its maiden flight on May 5, 2021. In 2022 RAAF No. 77 Squadron celebrated its 80th Anniversary.
