The Japan Air Self Defense force Air Development and Test Wing is located at Gifu AB and is responsible for the testing and accrediting new aircraft and technology. As part of the program F-35B 49-8751 was sent to the ADTW to be used in their studies. The JASDF initially ordered 42 F-35As and later an additional order for 105 F-35s. There will be 63 more F-35As and 42 F-35Bs. The F-35Bs will be deployed on the JS Izumo and JS Kaga when these ships have been overhauled to accommodate the Lightning II.
