VF-1 and VF-2 were established on October 14, 1972 at NAS Miramar. VF-1 “Wolfpack” was the 4th USN squadron to use the designation and on July 1, 1973 VF-1 received the first of its F-14As. The Wolfpack’s first cruise came aboard USS Enterprise in September 1974 and saw their first combat mission flying cover over Saigon in April 1974 when U.S. personnel were being evacuated during Operation Frequent Wind. In 1993 VF-1 was disestablished. F-14A 158979 went to AMARC in 1990 and scrapped in 1992.
