VF-84 “Jolly Rogers” began transitioning to the new F-14A Tomcat in 1977 and when training ended they were assigned to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in December 1977 for their first cruise with the Tomcat. Throughout the 1980s they sailed the Mediterranean several times, spent time off the coast of Lebanon when a TWA flight was hijacked and sailed the Caribbean. The CAG aircraft was AJ200/BuNo. 162688 and remained with VF-84 until 1996 when it was assigned to VF-101. VF-84 remained with the USS Nimitz until 1987.
