Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series HA6006 Su-27 Flanker B Red 93, Russian Navy Baltic Fleet, June 2017

The Su-27S (NATO reporting name - Flanker) is a single-seat highly- maneuverable fighter aircraft built by Sukhoi Design Bureau as the Soviet response to the U.S. F-14 and F-15 and entered service in 1985. The primary role of the Su-27 was to provide defense against American bombers, USN ships and provide Soviet bomber escorts. There have been many improvements over the years resulting in numerous variants of the Su-27. The export variant, the Su-27SK was sold to China and eventually developed into the license-built Shenyang J-11.

June 19, 2017 a Su-27 Flanker Red 93 did an intercept on a USAF RC-135U. This maneuver was conducted at high speed and closed to within twenty feet of the RC- 135U deeming it to be very unsafe for both aircraft. Red 93 was manufactured with c/n 36911031105 and given serial RF-33749. Su-27 Flanker B Red 93 wears the markings of the VMF Rossia (VMF - Volga Military Fleet) indicating it is a naval aircraft. The waving-red-banner is a Guard badge indicating an elite status unit as far back as Tsarist times.
