In August 1944 Colin Falkland Gray became the Wing Commander of the Lympne Wing and led it until January 1945. The Lympne Wing was equipped with the Spitfire XIV Gray was assigned RM787 and being Wing Commander he was able to use his own initials on the aircraft. The Lympne Wing operations saw them over France and Holland and the latter part of the year they provided bomber escort to Germany. With 27 victories Gray was the most successful New Zealander with 27 aerial victories.
