The engine was so massive and produced so much energy that a Hamilton Standard 13 feet 4 inch propeller, the largest of WWII, was required. The F4U was the first American fighter aircraft to exceed 400 MPH. The Corsair was referred to by the Japanese as “Whispering Death” and became a legend in its own time. This aircraft was one of the most distinctive designs with it bent wings making it an icon.

On April 6 1945 ground forces began preparing Kadena airstrip on Okinawa for the arrival of Corsairs from VMF-312 (Day’s Knights later known as the Checkerboards) that were due to arrive 3 days later. On April 12 1945 the unit made their initial contact with the enemy. On May 6 1945 during an attack near Okinawa’s capital Naha, 4 Corsairs were lost to enemy antiaircraft fire. 2nd Lt. Howard Ferguson Jr. and another pilot survived the ditching of their aircraft while 2 other pilots weren’t as fortunate.

1/48 scale pre-finished. Straight wing section can be removed and replaced with a section that makes it look like the wings are folded, no hinges. Die-cast metal with a minimum of plastic. Professionally painted. All markings pad applied for superb results. Canopy slides open. Comes with a pilot that can be removed. Comes with display stand. Option to easily remove the landing gear and cover the openings with doors. Extremely sought after by collectors.
