On November 27, 1957 six RF-101C “Longbirds” were prepped to be part of “Operation Sun Run”. Only four aircraft would actually fly with the other two as backups. The object of the operation would be have two aircraft fly Los Angeles to New York, while the other two would fly round trip Los Angeles – New York – Los Angeles and hopefully set speed records. Los Angeles to New York took 3 hours, 7 minutes, 43.63 seconds. The round trip was completed in 6 hours, 46 minutes and 36.21 seconds.
