German Army Group North began the siege of Leningrad on September 8, 1941 and it lasted for 872 days, until January 27, 1944. The city was chosen because it was the former capital of Russia; it was the main Baltic Sea Fleet base and home to numerous arms factories. Joined by Finnish forces the Germans were unable to take the city and because of the lengthy delay the Soviets were able to produce tanks, materiel and men to force the enemy to retreat.
