January 13, 1941 the 3rd Battalion, 73rd Armored Regiment was first formed as the 76th Tank Battalion. On May 8, 1941 the unit was re-designated the 756th Tank Battalion and activated on June 1, 1941 until it was inactivated on February 6, 1946. On August 1, 1946 the unit was re-activated and on January 15, 1948 it was re-designated the 756th Heavy Tank Battalion. On January10, 1949 the 756th Heavy Tank Battalion was re-designated the 73rd Heavy Tank Battalion and assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division until July 1950 the unit was once again re-designated the 73rd Tank Battalion and no longer attached to the 3rd Infantry Division. Once released from the 3rd Infantry the 73rd headed for Korea. On August 8, 1950 the 73rd arrived in Korea and on the 17th they were assigned to the defense of the Pusan perimeter. On August 27, 1950 M36 “Alice” became part of the unit. On September 2, 1950 the 73rd was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division. On July 1, 1957 the 73rd was inactivated having fought in major battles of the Korean War: Pork Chop Hill, Triangle Hill, Battle of White Horse, UN counter-offensive, crossing of the Imjin River and the recapture of Seoul.
