The 5th Infantry Division chose the letter “Y” as their divisional sign, symbolic of their county Yorkshire. In March 1942 the 5th began their long string of combat in Madagascar, India, Iraq, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Sicily, Italy, back Egypt and Palestine. Finally they ended up in North-West Europe. In July 1943 the 5th ID took part in the invasion of Sicily as well as in September 1943 they participated in the landings in Italy. The 5th were involved in combats at The Sangro, Garigliano Crossing, Anzio and finally Rome itself.
