September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland without any formal declaration of war. While the Germans moved in from the west the Soviet Union moved in from the east and between the two invaders carved up the entire country. The Blitzkrieg was so fast and overwhelming along with superior equipment and training the Polish forces found themselves severely outnumbered and outclassed. Many Polish units were cavalry still using horses and they didn’t stand a chance against tanks and heavy artillery. The invasion of Poland was completed on October 6, 1939.
