The M48A3 Patton arrived in Vietnam courtesy of the USMC in May 1965. From 1965 until 1970 there were three Marine Corps tank battalions or three anti-tank battalions involved in Vietnam. There were 600 Pattons in action during the Vietnam War. The M48 could be equipped with a flame thrower, machine guns and cannons. The cannons could use canister rounds to fire like a shot gun sending 1,280 pellets or 10,000 darts in a wide pattern killing enemy troops or just blasting through heavy thickets.
