The M60A1 tanks with Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) have an extra layer of protection and it extends their life. These added tiles are backed by shaped charges that blow the tiles away when struck, reducing the damage. In February 1991 USMC used 200 M60A1s to drive into Kuwait where they engaged Iraqi T-54/55, Type 69 and T-72 tanks in Kuwait City Airport. The USMC lost 1 tank to land mines and destroyed 100 Iraqi tanks. This was the largest USMC tank battle since WWII.
