Although the M60 MBT was phased out of U.S. service the tank continues to be used by the Taiwan Military. In recent years Taiwan had about 480 M60A1’s that were upgraded to M60A3 standards and had hoped to obtain M1 Abrams from the U.S. but the request was denied. Because of the refusal Taiwan sent two M60A3’s to their R&D institutes to evaluate and develop ways to further upgrade the M60A3’s. The upgrade will bring many improvements including a new fire control system, sighting systems as well as Active Protective Systems.
