The 76 mm M18 tank destroyer was produced by General Motors Buick Division who named the M18 the “Hellcat”. The M18 was the fastest tracked AFV of WWII reaching speeds up to 60 mph. The speed was possible because of the lack of heavy armor. The theory was speed would be the vehicles protection. Quite often German Panthers and Tigers would fall victim to the M18 because the German tanks turret couldn’t turn fast enough to return fire. The M18 was also present in the war in the Pacific.

M18 Hellcat “Dorothy” was manufactured in late 1943. “Dorothy” was assigned to B Company of the 827th Tank Destroyer Battalion. The 827th TDB was a segregated African American unit activated in April 1942. The 827th arrived in Europe in late 1944 and were sent to Marseille. In December they were attached to the 12th Armored Division at the front. The 827th was considered unruly and poorly trained but on January 9th and 10th 1945 B Company destroyed fifteen German tanks around and within Rittershoffen.
